Thread: Thoughts about Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair Photo?

  1. Thoughts about Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair Photo?

I don't see what all the hub-bub is all about. This image does not look trashy or pornographic to me in the least. First lets take a look at the image created by famed photographer Annie Leibowitz.

I personally think this country is WAY to uptight. I have seen her wear some outfits that show more skin that this on interviews and other TV spots. My daughter loves her so I get stuck watching her constantly. Some of the skirts and stuff she wears looks a lot trashier than her showing her back. Anyone who thinks this is racy must have some inner feelings they need to deal with.

    What are your thoughts?

  3. There is NOTHING wrong with this photo! The country is WAY too uptight because the effin media wants it that way! Jeez, has anybody seen some of the pics on myspace...? Some of the girls on there are younger and just trash! Thats what the media AND parents should be concerned about! Leave the girl alone, she shouldn't have to apologize for nothing! Besides, how can ANYONE question Annie Liebovitz?

I happen to agree with both of you, but I think the thread is more about the subject manner of HOW the 15 year was posed. Although I think it is unanimous so far that nobody (except the media) sees anything wrong with this photo. Although I happen to agree that it is not a show stopper I do think it is very tasteful and there is nothing she should appologize for.

Tony, I agree with you whole heartedly about the myspace pictures, pure trash! It is ashame what our world is becoming.

Annie Leibowitz is a very gifted talent behind a camera. Without a doubt, has taken many of the defining images of our generation and will go down in history as one of the crafts shining lights. In this image she has done what all great photographers do: helped us see her subject in a new light. I am sure Miley is thrilled with this image as it reveals her potential to go beyond teen idol to becoming a real woman. However, the fact that she was just 15 when they were taken is the cause for the controversy. As part of a personal collection, they would be prized possesions, but as a spread in Vanity Fair it's salacious, gratuitous and mercenary.

Leibowitz is an absolute tramp when it comes to marketing. Miley is neither the first nor the last to be embarrassed by Leibowitz'es penchant for releasing controversial images. She rather famously published images of her dying lover, Susan Sontag, much to the shagrin of Sontag's family. No celebity should enter her studio without knowing first that Annie is going to publish anything she wants regardless of the impact to their career. Like Mozart, she is an example of prodigious talent meeting questionable character.

  8. Questionable character is an odd term to describe an artist and her choice of imagery. A phrase more apt to a politician, perhaps. Artists follow their vision, for no other reason than it's natural. when it comes to composition, style, content...it's difficult for a true artist to be a critic, we can only speak about what WE would do in situations, how WE would have done it or preferred it...and then, it would cease to become that individuals image if they followed critique. I've always been glad I never took classes in any type of art I persued, preferring to keep my vision pure, true to what or how I see it or interpret. This image of Miley is a wonderful expression of a young woman discovering her sexuality, her journey into womanhood. It's not pornographic, and they hype around it is simply uptight folks being uptight. Ms Leibowitz had a wonderful immersion into characters for subjects with her work as Rolling Stone image maker, but her private work is equally expressive. You can't please everyone, that's a fact, but you can follow your artistic vision and keep your artistic integrity despite what any critic has to say.

  9. I am going to take the different road here. This is a pose that I could see on the cover of Playboy, Maxim, or any other sexually provacative magazine. Although there is no nudity or sex involved, there does seem to be an implied sexuality. I just feel that society today is too eager to rush the 15 year old girl into the category of a young woman.

  10. The road I will take is a U-turn on the same I came in on She is ugly skinny and too young.
