Thread: Canon 1D markIII

  1. Canon 1D markIII

Well I figure since I don't contribute that much around here anymore I will write a little mini-review of the Canon 1DmarkIII.

I can't give too much of a professional/detailed review because I have only had it for a little less than a month and used it a hand full of times. I have become dependent on using 1DmarkIIN's ever since switching to 1 series bodies. Through the past 12 months or so I have owned 3 of these bodies and do an excellent job. I highly recommend mk2n's to everyone. Even the mk2 is good and even more affordable.

The MK2n's are really great cameras but many things make use-ability difficult and pain in the azz. For example, instead of having a little knob on the left of the flash to do different things there are 3 buttons that you have to hold down in different combinations to get to certain functions and while you are switching functions you have to still continue to hold down this combination of buttons. Same with reviewing your images. You have to hold down the select button to scroll through images and hold the zoom button to zoom and it's not very user friendly.

This is where the MK3 comes into play. The MK3 gives you basically everything that is great about the MKII and improves everything to make the camera more user friendly.
    - There is a select button in the middle of the thumb wheel that (same as 30/40d and 5d) and the menu's are also similar.
    - The top 3 buttons now control independent functions so there is no need to figure out and hold down the different combination.
    - You don't have to hold down buttons to go through options and make selections.
    - Sensor cleaning mode - can be automatic (everytime you turn camera on or off)
    - Battery is about half the size of the MK2 battery and about 50% lighter. The whole camera overall is lighter than the MK2.
    - There is a new battery power meter tells you what % of power your battery has remaining. Everytime you press the menu button this is the first option you get so you can quickly and easily get a Very accurate reading of how much power you have remaining instead of trying to judge by just looking at the picture.
    - ISO selector is right by the shutter, very easy to access.
    - White balance selector is right by the thumb very easy
    - Picture style is also right by the thumb very easy.
    - The autofocus is amazing, I thought the mk2n was quick but god dammmmm this thing is like crack fiend when trying to lock focus onto something.
    - The mk2n shutter is kind of loud, the mk3 shutter is more quiet but still sounds nice.

One thing that tricked me up was image size/type. It was kinda screwy how to select image size/type but I figured it out on the fly so it's not difficult, just different.

The MK3 is great but I'm having a hard time putting down the mk2n.

I will review more later, it's past my bedtime.
