Thread: Canon G Series..

  1. Canon G Series..

I currently own a Canon G10 and I love it. The one thing that bothers me about using a compact camera is the difficulty in getting anything resembling bokeh. Anyone using any of the canon g-series cameras or had some time to play with one?

    Thoughts?
    Canon 5d · 17-40mm f4L · 24-70mm 2.8L · 70-200mm f4L · 50mm f1.8 II · 35mm f2 · 550 ex

  2. Getting good bokeh is all in the lens. Being that the G10 is a point and shoot with a fixed lens it's going to be difficult.
Even in aperture mode the results from a G10 won't be anywhere near what you can get from any prime or L lens.

    Tips to get good boken.
    - Make sure there is plenty of separation between your subject and the background
    - Use your lighting wisely, try to use some strobes, if you don't have any kind of radio triggers you can get a hot shoe PC adapter, you will be able to plug your 580ex right into the hot shoe via PC sync cable. There is also a cable that you can mount your flash to that provides use of PC Sync if your flash doesn't have a built in PC sync connection. I don't believe the 550ex does so the cable might come in handy...

Slip something like this onto your G10 hot shoe.

    or
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...hoe_to_PC.html - $14.50
From there you can run a PC Cable to your 550ex
This is the one your mount your flash to.
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=421306&is=REG - $35.95

And you will be able to shoot with off camera lights!!
If you already have pocketwizards or radio triggers nevermind everything I just said.

    EDIT:

hehe wow just saw this pic and remembered this thread.....

  3. I have a Canon g10 and I love it. I probably could not help you with your problem since I am not sure what bokeh is.

Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points. Differing amounts of spherical aberration alter how lenses render out-of-focus. Aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas of an image projected by a camera lens.
Basically what that means... When you take a picture and your subject is sharp in focus, and the background is blurred out. The quality of the blurred out background is it's bokeh. That's like the easiest way i can think to describe it, it's the blurriness in the background.

Being that the G9 and G10 are point and shoot cameras with fixed lenses, it's going to be very difficult and impossible to get the amazing quality bokeh you can get from a digital slr.
Sure you can get some bokeh and it might be comparable to the results from basic canon lenses, but this camera will never produce bokeh similar to that of a nice canon prime lens.
